The southern live oak is a large, slow growing oak tree that has been planted in the Tucson area for decades. While its year-round, dark green leaves give the appearance of an evergreen tree, they do actually drop their leaves in the spring when new growth emerges. Due to their slower growth rate, lack of thorns, and upright growth pattern, these oaks make for great, low-maintenance street trees and can be spotted all over downtown Tucson.
