Save a Saguaro on A Mountain: SOS Month Kickoff Day Buffelgrass Pull

More Info

Beat back invasive buffelgrass to save our saguaros! Join us Saturday, February 5th from 9am-12pm on A Mountain (Sentinel Peak) to pull buffelgrass on this beloved mountain. This pull celebrates Kickoff Day of Save Our Saguaros Month, February 5th through March 5th, 2022. We will provide gloves, pick axes and digging bars for those who want to pull. You’ll also get to meet a Desert Museum live animal, and have a chance to win prizes! Don’t think you’re up for pulling buffelgrass? We still need your help! Come learn how to identify and map buffelgrass with a simple and free app called EDDMaps. Or simply come to check out the gorgeous views of our city and meet some new people! Walk-ups welcome but you can also register and view other pulls here Our partners for this pull include Tucson Clean and Beautiful, Tohono O’odham Nation Natural Resources Department, and Pima County Natural Resources Department. ABOUT SAVE OUR SAGUAROS MONTH: We need your help! Every year, in the month of February, we call on our community to help us save saguaros and the animals that call them home. From what? Buffelgrass and fountaingrass! These invasive grasses smother young saguaros and fuel fires that can kill both young and old saguaros alike. Most of our native plants are not adapted to fire. In contrast, buffelgrass thrives on fire. This is one of the major dangers of buffelgrass. If a fire occurs in an uninvaded desert setting, it burns out quickly, but if fire starts in a buffelgrass-invaded desert, it will spread rapidly as far as this fire-loving grass will carry it.
