The Honey Mesquite is a small to medium sized tree maturing between 15 and 30 feet in height and width. It has a moderate growth rate. It is an ideal shade tree with attractive, bright green leaves. It produces spikes of fragrant yellow flowers in late spring. Bees produce good honey from mesquites. It has abundant long seed pods. The seed pods are sweet and can be ground in a hammer mill after drying to produce a nutritious and sweet tasting flour. Twigs often have large thorns, and the pollen is an allergen, though heavy so it does not travel far.
