The Chitalpa is a hybrid flowering tree in the Bignoniaceae family. It is cross bred from our native desert willow (Chilopsis linearis) for its hardiness, shape and flower color, and the southern catalpa (Catalpa bignonioides) for its larger leaves and blooms. The larger flowers are also sterile, so you will not have any seed pods dropping in your yard. The name Chitalpa is simply a combination of the two parent names: Chilopsis and Catalpa.
Those that love the desert willow (and there are a lot of you, as the desert willow is consistently our most popular tree), will also love the Chitalpa!
