10 Tips to Grow Native Desert Trees

with Harvested Water

presentation & discussion with Ann Audrey

The coolness of shade comforts us on a hot summer day. Tucson averages less than 8 percent tree canopy coverage, with several neighborhoods having less than 4 percent. Increasing the urban tree canopy has multiple benefits but requires more water at a time when potable water systems are stressed. What if we could increase the shade tree canopy around our homes without substantially increasing our water bills? Planting these trees in appropriate locations and supporting them with harvested water can provide our homes and neighborhoods with shady, climate-resilient trees, while saving precious (and costly) drinking water.  Ann will provide tips on the best desert trees to plant, and where and how to make optimum use of harvested water to help Tucson grow into a greener and cooler community.

Ann Audrey is a U of A graduate with a Master of Science in Hydrology and Water Resources, as well as a Master of Science in Nutritional Biochemistry along with multiple Permaculture Certifications.

This presentation and discussion is provided in partnership with Tucson Clean & Beautiful, the Arizona Department of Forestry and Fire Management, and Mayor Regina Romero’s Tucson Million Trees initiative.
